Honesdale, Pennsylvania August 2018 –Calkins Creek, an imprint of Highlights, is proud to announce the publication of MEMPHIS, MARTIN AND THE MOUNTAINTOP: The Sanitation Strike of 1968.  Written by Alice Faye Duncan, a librarian in Memphis, Tennessee, and illustrated by Caldecott-honor artist R. Gregory Christie, this historical fiction picture book honors the 50th anniversary of the strike as well as Dr. King’s tragic death.  The book will be released on August 28, 2018.

MEMPHIS, MARTIN AND THE MOUNTAINTOP presents the story of nine-year-old Lorraine Jackson, who witnessed and participated in the protest with her father, a sanitation worker, and her mother. In the book, Lorraine was with her family in Memphis Temple Church when Dr. King delivered his final “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” sermon.  A combination of poetry and prose tells Lorraine’s story, while stunning and powerful artwork perfectly complements the words, making this story and history accessible and understandable for young readers – and all who read it.
