Jack is moping about the house, waiting for a letter that will tell him whether he won the drawing contest. When he finally hears the lid of the mailbox open, he rushes outside so fast that he doesn't even notice how windy it is outside. All he knows is that he hasn't heard from the contest. They didn't even send him a letter to say he didn't win. What a strange day!

Reviews

"This Dutch import is smoothly translated and teems with funny visuals. Ten Cate's full-bleed paintings depict verdant hills, azure sky and an animal array slyly borrowing from the villagers an assortment of articles (including the postman's hat and shoes). A breezy, kid-savvy delight."
     —Kirkus Reviews

"Dutch artist ten Cate's landscapes may be delicate and winsome, but they also brim with scenes of farce and slapstick. She does a terrific job of visually intertwining clueless Jack's tale with that of the dogged mailman. It all adds up to a clever comedy of coincidences and misadventures, with ample rewards for attentive youngsters."
     —Publishers Weekly

"This delightful story is simply told and illustrated with charm and humor, reminiscent of Bruce McMillan’s The Problem with Chickens (Houghton, 2005). An entertaining read-aloud."
