"Our sons are growing up far from the British Caribbean that nurtured my husband and me. My writing, I have found, can be a vehicle for bringing those faraway voices near. I hope that, as I grow more skillful, voices of distant grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins will come through more clearly, teaching old melodies to my sons and adding new harmonies to the songs of other children."
