Reviews
School Library Journal
"Each of the rich, luxurious spreads contains one line of graceful script and a softly hued illustration, all edged with decorative borders. The flora and fauna in each exquisite painting have personal or religious significance that is explained in an appended notes section. This inspiring picture book celebrates the beauty and power of nature as well as the comforting words of the Lord's Prayer."
Horn Book Guide
"The paintings … successfully convey the prayer's reverent tone."
Publishers Weekly
"Nature lovers and fans of the talented Holder (Aesop's Fables) will find much to appreciate in the true-to-life, elegantly composed watercolors of flora and fauna in this picture book."
Kirkus Reviews
"Holder has created a breathtaking interpretation of the Lord's Prayer … a new view of ancient words for all ages."
Mothering Magazine
"[T]ake a look at Heidi Holder's luxurious pictorial settings for "The Lord's Prayer," in her book of the same title. I have no specific religious inclinations whatsoever, but I found this book deeply affecting. Holder allows one double spread for each sentence or phrase of "The Lord's Prayer," rendering the text in exquisitely archaic-seeming lettering. On the facing pages, animal dramas, some quite strange, are intricately rendered with dreamlike realism. The illustrations are open to whatever stories or readings you may make for them. That should be just fine. However, in the back, Holder offers brief explanations for the profound symbolic and emblematic religious lore that informs each painting. Her reverence for the minutest naturalistic detail rewards slow study of every corner of each picture. The absence of human beings in Holder's enchanted world surely must be significant as well-although I cannot tell you how."
Midwest Book Review -- The
"Beautifully illuminated throughout by the museum quality artwork … spectacular illustration … [An] impressive work of inspired and inspiring art."
Christian Library Journal
"[Holder] does a remarkable job ... in detailing the significance drawn into each picture. [A] wonderful tool [for] teaching The Lord's Prayer. … Holder uses nature, animals, and even insects along with the words of faith … to get the reader to think more deeply about these important words often uttered by memory without much thought. … [T]his book is worthy of a spot on many bookshelves."
Detroit Free Press
"If you're looking for a religious gift this spring for a First Communion or for Easter, a new illustrated book by Heidi Holder, The Lord's Prayer would be ideal."
